Notes contract research report no. 383/2001. (CRR383)(CRR 383)
Abstract This report analyses the results obtained from five different series of tests conducted by BG Technology during which atmospheric gas sampling was carried out within single and multiple room enclosures where a gas appliance was operated under fault conditions and in so doing contributed towards the vitiation of the combustion air supply. The data indicates a critical band of oxygen concentrations in the combustion air supply within which the rate of production of carbon monoxide increases significantly. The implications of this are discussed including the possibility of using oxygen sensing in a room as a pre-warning to an occupant of a dangerous situation. This report and the work it describes were funded by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Its contents, including any opinions and/or conclusions expressed, are those of the authors alone and do not necessarily reflect HSE policy.
