The guidance is intended for those involved in the design, manufacture, examination, supply, importation, and use of go-karts. It lists hazards and outlines the precautions needed to avoid them. It gives advice on design and inspection; buying and selling; track design and maintenance and safe operations. Most advice concerns go-karts used in fairgrounds. However, the guidance is also relevant to go-karts used at separate karting tracks where it should be read in conjunction with 'Health and safety at motor sport events: a guide for employers and organisers ISBN 0717607054. The guidance is not intended to cover all-terrain karts or go-karts used in competitive motor sport events regulated by a recognised motor sport governing body such as the Motor Sports Association.
