| Abstract |
Carbon Monoxide (CO) accumulation in properties resulting from gas installations malfunctioning in a domestic situation has been implicated in incidents involving the death or personal injury of domestic gas users. In recent years there were between 20 and 30 annual fatalities attributable to CO emissions from domestic gas appliances and about ten times this number treated in hospital. The increasing availability of domestic CO alarms has made the issue of CO toxicity more widely publicised and the installation of devices to provide a warning of CO build-up has become more widespread as a complement to regular gas appliance servicing. This report and the work it describes were funded by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Its contents, including any opinions and/or conclusions expressed, are those of the authors alone and do not necessarily reflect HSE policy. |
