Abstract Exposure to dioxins can happen to workers recycling aluminium, copper and its alloys, and zinc. This leaflet is aimed at employers and employees, and has guidance on how workers should be protected (by minimising the amount of dust and fume produced, and by using protective equipment and ensuring proper hygiene procedures are followed). It will be of interest to everyone involved in the aluminium industry. NB - There is only one zinc recycler and no copper recyclers in Britain, which explains the apparent discrepancy between the title of the leaflet and the first sentence of this abstract. Contents: What are dioxins? How are they formed? How much dioxin is formed in metal recycling? Legal requirements? Pre-furnace work - sorting, shredding and cleaning? Furnace loading? Furnace operation? Dross removal and cooling? Dust handling? How to prevent dioxins entering your body? Summary; Further reading; Further information.
