Concerns - FAQ

Find out about the process and procedure involved in raising a concern from our most frequently asked questions.

What should my employer be doing?

You can find out what the health and safety law requires by searching our website, start by looking under the relevant topic or industry section.

Can HSE help me with my concern?

Yes, but firstly, check if HSE is the correct enforcing authority for your concern using our Stop check.

How do I raise a concern about my workplace?

Information on raising your concern is available.

What happens after I raise a concern?

We will check that the concern relates to a work activity where HSE is responsible for enforcing health and safety legislation. The subsequent steps are detailed in the "After you raise a concern" page.

Will someone from HSE visit the company?

Your concern will be assessed by the workplace Concerns Team. We may then ask the employer to investigate your concern or we may look into it ourselves.

How long will it take to follow up my concern?

A concerns officer will assess the information you have provided and place it into the appropriate category.

Will I get feedback on what HSE has done?

If you have requested feedback when you raised your concern, we will aim to contact you and let you know what we have done.

Will HSE disclose my name if I raise a concern?

HSE will not disclose your name if you don't want them to. HSE recognises that it is difficult for people to raise concerns and that they may be vulnerable ie from fear of dismissal or fear of other repercussions.

We do need your name and correct contact details in case we need to clarify any points with you, so it is important that you provide this information.

HSE cannot help you get compensation or resolve problems of civil law.

If you dissatisfied with HSE’s decision in relation to your concerns then you can appeal.

Why isn’t there a telephone number for my local office on your website?

The changes HSE has made are in line with the overarching public sector strategy to deliver more public services online. As with the rest of government, HSE is working to improve the efficiency and deliver value for money to the taxpayer, whilst also maintaining an effective regulatory system. Reviewing and developing the channels through which we provide information is one way of doing this. In parallel, work has been carried out to ensure HSE's website provides a clearer more intuitive journey to make it easier for people to access the guidance they need.
